AM IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR: THE CASE OF DONE LAB
We are proud to share our successful work in developing an innovative electronic housing for motorcycles, which reduced costs and development time while maintaining technical performance.
DONE Lab was called to rethink and reengineer a prototype based on an existing electronic casing designed to integrate a digital display system created by Bosch Car Multimedia S.A. for motorcycles, as part of the SIFA – Smart System for Additive Manufacturing project.
The goal was to create a functional prototype that met strict electromagnetic compatibility standards (CISPR 25), without the long lead times and high costs of traditional metal or injection molding.
To address this challenge, DONE Lab applied advanced additive manufacturing, using the Markforged FX20, with the support of 3DZ Portugal. The solution involved redesigning the casing for 3D printing using carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials. This approach ensured both mechanical strength and protection against electromagnetic interference.
The result was a manufactured prototype with the potential to meet the required automotive industry standards, fully developed and delivered by DONE Lab. The process proved to be more agile and flexible than conventional methods, allowing efficient development from design to final validation and confirming the potential of composite materials in demanding automotive applications.
This project demonstrated how applied research, industrial collaboration, and advanced manufacturing technologies can work together to drive innovation with impact.
Congratulations to the DONE Lab team for their technical excellence and commitment throughout this successful project.
