NEW ARTICLE ON AUTOMOTIVE LOGO PRODUCTION WITH AM

We’re excited to share our research focused on the use of PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) technology to produce 3D automotive logos, published by Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais.

In this study, titled "Production and evaluation of the surface roughness of polymer mould inserts for injection moulding of automotive logos”, we explored the use of hybrid moulds to make product development faster and more cost-effective for short production runs. These combine a conventional mould structure produced by subtractive manufacturing, combining 3D-printed polymer inserts, allowing design teams to test and validate details before moving to full-scale production. We tested two materials and additive manufacturing technologies: Digital ABS (Material Jetting) and High Temp V2 (Stereolithography).

We also evaluated how 3D printing parameters and surface finishing processes impact surface roughness, which plays a key role in the quality and durability of the final PVD-coated inserts.

This work shows how additive manufacturing and traditional injection moulding can work together to bring more flexibility, accelerate time-to-market and drive innovation to the automotive industry.
